Sustainable Hair Salon in Geelong
Salon Eve is Geelong’s sustainable hair salon. Since joining Sustainable Salons Australia in 2017, we’ve saved 6,000kg of waste from landfill, saved 40 trees, donated over 1,500 meals to OzHarvest, and helped create jobs for people with disabilities. Every visit you make to Salon Eve contributes to something bigger than a great haircut.
None of this would be possible without the Geelong community who keeps choosing to spend their appointments here. We’re proud of what we’ve built together, and incredibly grateful for every single one of you who’s been part of it.

How a Piece of Foil Changed the Way We Run Our Salon
Most people don’t think twice about aluminium foil. It wraps your highlights, it does its job, it lands in the bin. But when Barb heard this one statistic about foil, she couldn’t unhear it. “1 piece of aluminium foil takes up to 100 years to break down in landfill.” Multiply that by a full head of highlights. Multiply that by every appointment, every week, across every hair salon in the country. Australian salons alone were sending one million kilograms of infinitely recyclable foil to landfill every year.
“What makes it real for us is that each client appointment gets to be part of the sustainability journey. Every piece of waste from your appointment, the foil, the hair, the colour tubes goes somewhere meaningful instead of the bin.”

That’s why Salon Eve joined Sustainable Salons Australia. Because Barbara and the team believe a salon visit should leave you feeling good in every sense. Not just about your hair, but about where your money went and what your appointment left behind. Since opening in December 2012, sustainability has been part of who we are. A genuine commitment to this community and this planet.
“We recycle hair, plastic, metals, paper and electronic goods. We also donate cut hair to Variety, a charity that uses it to make wigs for people experiencing medical hair loss.”
Every time you come in for a colour appointment or a balayage, your foil feeds families, your hair protects coastlines, your visit creates a job for someone who needs one. That’s what sustainable hairdressing looks like in practice.
What Actually Happens to the Waste From Your Appointment?
Every piece of waste from your Salon Eve appointment is sorted into separate streams and collected by Sustainable Salons Australia. Up to 95% of it is diverted from landfill. Here’s where it goes:
Your hair clippings get swept from the floor and stuffed into stockings to make what Sustainable Salons call Hair Booms. These sausage shaped tools are deployed at ocean spill sites and waterways around Australia to absorb oil. The hair you leave on the floor at Salon Eve could one day be protecting a coastline.
The foil from your highlights gets collected, baled and sent to a metal recycler. It’s melted down and turned into new aluminium products. The proceeds from that sale go directly to OzHarvest to provide meals for people doing it tough. Across a year at Salon Eve, that adds up.

Your colour tubes and product packaging are either recycled into new materials or sent to specialist plastic recyclers who turn them into outdoor furniture and landscape supplies. None of it goes into the ocean.
Chemical waste from your colour service, instead of going down the drain into waterways, is collected and neutralised at a chemical recycling facility. It becomes recycled water used in construction and manufacturing.

The Ponytail That Becomes Someone’s Hair Again

One of the things we’re so proud of at Salon Eve is the ponytail donation program. If you’re thinking of a big change and your hair is 20cm or longer, we can make sure it doesn’t go to waste. And good news, coloured hair is now accepted too. So if you’ve been holding off because your hair isn’t natural, that’s no longer a reason to wait.
Across the Sustainable Salons network of 1,500 members across Australia and New Zealand, salons have now donated over 300,000 ponytails to support cancer and alopecia charities. Some salons donate 10 ponytails a year. Some donate 50. It all adds up.
Just let your stylist know before your appointment. We’ll cut it carefully, bag it properly. One haircut. One donation. Someone out there gets to feel like themselves again.

The Products We Use
Sustainability carries through to what we put on your hair too. Salon Eve uses Pureology, which is 100% vegan, paraben free and sulphate free. We use Original & Mineral (O&M), an Australian brand that’s PETA certified vegan and free from harsh chemicals. These aren’t just brands we stock. They’re brands we chose because they align with how we think a salon should operate.
Thank You Geelong
Sustainable hairdressing isn’t something Salon Eve does alone. It takes a community of clients who care about where their money goes and what their appointment leaves behind. Geelong has given us that community from the very beginning — every visit, every ponytail donation, every client who books knowing their appointment means something beyond a great colour. A sustainable salon only works because of the people who choose it. So thank you, we are so grateful for every single one of you who’s been part of it.

Frequently Asked Questions — Sustainable Hair Salon Geelong
Is Salon Eve actually a certified sustainable salon?
Salon Eve is a verified member of Sustainable Salons Australia, an independently run social enterprise. Membership is not self certified. Sustainable Salons collect, sort and process every material themselves, and all members are listed in their public salon directory. You can find Salon Eve’s listing at sustainablesalons.org and see it tagged as Popular in the network.
Do you need to do anything differently to visit a sustainable salon?
Nothing at all. Your appointment runs exactly the same way as any other salon. The difference happens behind the scenes, in how your waste is sorted and collected after you leave. The one thing you can actively contribute is letting your stylist know if you’d like to donate your ponytail before your cut. And if you know someone who’s thinking of a big change and has 20cm or more of hair to give, send them our way. It’s one of the nicest things you can do with a haircut.
